Sierra Leone’s “Freetown the Tree Town” initiative has distributed 25,000 trees across the city, with residents enthusiastically collecting them from various locations. This effort is part of a broader plan to enhance environmental sustainability and increase community involvement in greening the city.
This marks a significant milestone in Freetown’s efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and boost community engagement.
To kick off the initiative, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr planted the first of 600 trees at Aberdeen Beach in honour of the late Sia Kamara, a former Communications and Community Engagement Specialist renowned for her contributions to the city’s green efforts.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr reflected on her dedication to expanding Freetown’s green spaces and emphasized that this citywide tree-planting initiative aims to instill a sense of ownership among residents while contributing to the city’s sustainability goals.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive monitoring system has been implemented to track the progress of each tree with every tree tagged with a unique identifier code and monitored through the “Freetown the Tree Town” tracker app, ensuring that the initiative achieves its intended impact.
