France will today, Monday press for the adoption of European sanctions against the Malian transitional government.
France says the move comes against the backdrop of those announced by the regional bloc – the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to spokeswoman for the French foreign ministry, the European Union must adopt a legal framework quickly in order to take similar restrictive measures in supports of the ECOWAS against those who hindered the implementation of the transition.
She said the Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will share this position at a meeting of his counterparts from EU countries in Brussels.
Recall, ECOWAS on November 7 imposed individual sanctions on the members of the junta because of the delay in the organization of the elections which must consecrate the return of power to civilians after two coups in the country.
An EU spokesperson a day after the announcement said the Twenty-Seven-member body has started discussions to consider targeted sanctions.
