ECOWAS will convene an Extraordinary Summit on the Guinea coup on Thursday. The West African state was hit by fresh turmoil on Sunday when special forces arrested 83-year-old President Alpha Conde, declared they were scrapping the constitution, and imposed a curfew.
While the coup leaders have promised a new "union" government will be formed in weeks, Guinea's main opposition National Alliance for Democratic Change (ANAD) says it is ready to accompany the coup plotters to complete the transition to democratic civilian rule.
