The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is planning a mop-up exercise to retrieve substantial amounts of weapons including small arms and ammunition illegally owned by persons.
A recent UN study found a worrying surge in weapons produced and in circulation in the sub-region with about eight (8) million in the hands of non-state actors.
Small arms and light weapons account for most of the continent’s conflict-related deaths with an estimated 100 million light weapons circulating in Africa.
