Ryota Jonen, an expert in democracy has opined that good governance is an essential component of development.
According to him, this key attribute has been paramount in the transformation of countries in different parts
of the world.
However, that has not been the case in Africa following a bad governance that has deprived the population of the needed development.
Mr Jonen who is the director at World Movement for Democracy, an initiative of the National endowment for Democracy, noted that democratization is slowing, with more autocrats emerging through pseudo-elections, military coups, suppression of fundamental rights, and attempts to extend power through constitutional changes, adding that these issues hinder sustainable development and democratic progress.
He spoke on the sideline of a Solidarity conference held in Dakar for Civil society organizations, pressure groups and international donors across Africa.
