Deliberation of the Inclusivity of Human Rights in AfCFTA continues.

The year 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Principles by the UN General Assembly and the 42nd anniversary of the adoption of the African Charter.

As such, the first day of the 2023 Policy Forum was dedicated to taking stock of the status of African NHRIs, including a reflection on the achievements and challenges faced towards the attainment of the A Status.

This is as Africa prepares to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Organization of African Unity on 25th May 2023. The AU will also adopt “Acceleration of AfCFTA Implementation” as its theme for 2023.

For human rights advocates at the ongoing policy dialogue in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, said the adoption can only be completed with a review of citizens’ rights across the continent.

Edmund Foley, interim head of the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa, in this interview with WADR, sums up the activities marking day one of the policy dialogue.
