Minister of Defense, Dominic Nitiwul has challenged Ghanaians to report, with evidence, any top government official who is engaged in illegal mining.

This comes as the government takes a shard stand against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey and irresponsible mining.

Already, mining equipment worth millions of US Dollars have been seized and destroyed by members of operation Halt, set up to tackle the menace.

In the third phase of the operation, 49 excavators, 228 changfans, 87 water pumping machines among other mining equipment were destroyed, including equipment belonging to a company managed by women’s organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party Kate Gyamfua.

Addressing journalists, defense minister Nitiwul said with the amount of damage done to the forest and water bodies, citizens watching on while the officials engage in illegal mining are doing more harm than good to the people of Ghana.
