Togo is set to benefit from The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and Japan 2.4 billion dollars support to States adhering to the COVAX initiative.
The decision was taken on the sidelines of the One World Protected summit, which is dedicated to Covid vaccines.
The funds, raised by 40 private and public donors, adds to an initial 6.3 billion mobilized before the One World Protected campaign launched on April 15.
The Gavi COVAX initiative now has a total amount that exceeds the initial target of 8.3 billion.
The fund will enable the WHO backed – vaccine sharing platform COVAX, reach its goal of delivering 2 billion doses globally in 2021 and to order, another 1.8 billion doses of vaccine for low-income countries that adhere to the initiative by early 2022.
Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé who attended the virtual summit, said The summit was a timely opportunity as it brought together leaders from donor countries, COVAX-eligible countries, and international stakeholders in the fight against Covid-19.
Togo, a member of the COVAX initiative, expects three million AstraZeneca doses by August 2021.
