Former Ivoirian President Laurent Gbagbo was elected without surprise president of the African People's Party Ivory Coast PPA CI over the weekend.

The election came at the end of two days of constitutive congress, which saw the presence of more than 1600 congressmen from all over Cote d’Ivoire and several other countries.

The congress took place at Hotel Ivoire.

Officially launched on Saturday, the African People’s Party Cote d’Ivoire already claims 93 thousand members.

The new party of Laurent Gbagbo wants to be a pan-Africanist formation. Its name, African People's Party Cote d’Ivoire, already gives a clear indication of this.

For Laurent Gbagbo, the salvation of the continent will come from its unity.

Once again, Mr. Gbagbo insisted in his speech on the release of political prisoners and the return of exiles.

A special motion was even read out calling for the return of Charles Blé Goudé. Acquitted at the same time as Laurent Gbagbo, the former leader of the Young Patriots of Côte d'Ivoire remains stranded in Europe.
