We are turning our attention to the developing political situation in Guinea Bissau. It all started when Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló announced on February 23, 2025, that the country’s presidential election would take place on November 30.
The decision comes as ECOWAS and the United Nations deployed a mission to facilitate consensus on the electoral calendar. The joint mission was in the country until February 28 and planned to engage all stakeholders in the electoral process.
President Embaló expressed his intention to remain in power until his successor is inaugurated, a stance that has drawn criticism from the opposition, led by former Prime Minister Domingos Simões Pereira.
The Supreme Court also ruled that his official mandate ends on September 4.
