Calm has returned to Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital following the weekend’s demonstrations over the worsening security situation in the country.

The protesters, many of whom are young people, set up roadblocks and vandalized some government offices, triggering a response from the police who fired teargas to disperse them.

Since the November 14 jihadist attack that killed 53 persons, including four civilians in Inata in the Soum province, the call for protests by activist groups against the state has been amplified.

Last week, Burkinabe President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, promised a cabinet reshuffle and a revamp of the military operations after hundreds of demonstrators called for his resignation.

Tanga Kafando is a Burkinabe journalist and analyst in Ouagadougou.
