At least 10 people have been killed by suspected Islamist militants in northern Burkina Faso.

Security officials said an armed group raided Namssiguian village in Bam province on Saturday.

They burned down buildings, stole property and sabotaged a mobile phone mast so nobody could call for help.

The BBC reports that people are killed by insurgents almost every day in Burkina Faso, especially members of the security forces.

Violent Islamism is intensifying across the Sahel despite the presence of international, regional and local forces.

In recent years, it has spread south into Burkina Faso.
