Benin’s Electoral Commission has released the 2026 general election timetable, but concerns remain over transparency and fairness.

Journalist and political analyst Gafoudou Sapkoho, speaking from Cotonou, says the opposition is worried about the revision of the electoral roll and recent changes to electoral laws, which they claim could disadvantage non-ruling parties.

Civil society organizations, which often play a watchdog role during elections, are also facing growing restrictions ahead of the polls.

With just months to go, observers say the political climate will require close monitoring to ensure a credible electoral process.
