The Beninese government has imposed a six-month temporary ban on the export of grains and tubers to neighbouring countries.
In a decree adopted by the council minister, Cotonou intends to promote the country’s food self-sufficiency.
The decree was endorsed by the ministers of Industry and Commerce, Economy and Finance, as well as Agriculture.
During this period according to the decree, the export of cereals outside the national territory is formally prohibited and violators of this new restrictive measure will be sanctioned.
These include the seizure and auction of said products if illegally exported.
No country was specifically, but it should be recalled that Benin and Niger have for months witnessed a growing diplomatic rift which stemmed from Niamey’s refusal to open its land borders.
