Following his nomination to mediate the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, reactions are pouring in. Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé was appointed by African Union (AU) Bureau Chair, Angolan President João Lourenço, during a meeting over the weekend.
The AU emphasized the need for continued dialogue between the two nations. However, some observers, including Congolese international relations expert Christian Géraud Neema, have raised questions about whether President Gnassingbé has the necessary leverage to resolve the longstanding tensions between the DRC and Rwanda.
This development is seen as a critical diplomatic step, but its success hinges on the willingness of both parties to engage in meaningful negotiations.
