Recent military coups and increasing threats of terrorism and extremist activities on the African continent has triggered an African Union forum to thoroughly discuss the developments aimed at find lasting solutions to them.
Between March 2021 and March 2022 there have been 4 military coups in Africa, a concern the union says is reversing the democratic gains made.
Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo says collective agreements and bold actions are the surest ways of dealing with coups on the African continent.
Speaking at the opening of the forum on coups in Africa, the ECOWAS chair also called for the review of the existing AU framework on coups to include civilians who circumvent the constitution to stay in power beyond mandated periods.
