COP30, the world’s largest climate gathering, opened in Brazil on Monday, bringing together global leaders, climate experts, academics, researchers, business executives, civil society, and media representatives. The summit marks ten years since the Paris Agreement and comes at a critical moment for global climate action.
Outgoing COP29 President Muktar Babayev emphasized that the current era must focus on implementation rather than promises. He noted that despite progress, a substantial gap remains in delivering the annual 100 billion dollars pledged for climate mitigation and adaptation.
Babayev stressed that many commitments made over the years have yet to translate into adequate financing for vulnerable nations. This shortfall, he said, continues to slow global efforts to strengthen resilience and reduce emissions.
He delivered these remarks during the opening ceremony of COP30 before formally handing over the presidency to his successor, urging the global community to accelerate concrete climate action.
