WHO reports progress in the fight against tobacco epidemic

The World health organization on Tuesday launched its report on the global tobacco epidemic.

This report, which tracks the progress made by countries in tobacco control since 2008, for the first time, presented data on electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as ‘e-cigarettes’.

The report showed that many countries are making progress in the fight against tobacco, but some are not addressing emerging nicotine and tobacco products and failing to regulate them. 

During the launch, WHO Director General - Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on governments to monitor the use of tobacco and encourage preventive measures including, protecting people from tobacco smoke; offering help to quit, enforcing bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

According to UN health agency, more than 8 million people die annually from tobacco use.
