Congo votes as Nguesso seeks to extend 36-year reign

Nearly 2.5 million voters went to polls on Sunday in Congo Brazzaville to elect a new leader.

The 2021 race has incumbent president Denis Sassou Nguesso contesting the presidency alongside six other opponents.

Sassou Nguesso, now 71, has been at the helm of the country’s affairs since his first win in 1979 and a comeback in 1991 after which, he had won at the polls in each of the presidential elections.
