A court in Senegal has sentenced a leading opposition politician Khalifa Sall to five years in jail for fraud.
Friday’s verdict will rule Sall out of presidential elections due next February.
The 62 yer-old who is mayor of Dakar, had denied the charges against him as politically motivated.
He had been accused of fraudulent use of public funds.
He was found not guilty on charges of criminal conspiracy, money laundering and misappropriating public funds.
Prosecutors had sought a seven-year prison term against Sall, who was tried along with his financial director, Mbaye Toure, and six other defendants.
Opposition Member of Parliament Mamadou Lamine Diallo gave his reaction to the court’s ruling.
