Gambia: TRRC bill promises justice, stakeholders skeptical

  • 15 December 2017

The victims of the regime of the Gambia’s ex-president, Yahya Jammeh are inching closer to justice, following the passing of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Bill.
The TRRC bill, which was passed late Wednesday, seeks, among other things, to unveil rights violations and abuses committed between July 1994 and January 2017.
Though its passing has generally been welcomed in the Gambia, some stakeholders are concerned about the prerogative power of the commissioners to grant amnesty in the Bill.
Sheriff Kijera, the vice president of the Gambia Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violations, spoke to us on the line from Banjul.
