A project to fight border harassments in West Africa has been launched here in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

The project is financed by the European Union through the convention of contribution EU-ECOWAS of the European Development Funds.

It is an initiative of the Student and Youth Travel Organization in Senegal (SYTO).

“The project is going to target border issues between Senegal and the Gambia, and Senegal and Mauritania,” said Professor Oumar Ndongo, General Secretary of the West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF).

Prof Ndongo said this initiative is very important as citizens from the sub-region are often harassed by customs and other security officials, despite the close cultural and geographical ties between the people and nations in West Africa.

From bribery to annoying luggage searching, citizens of West Africa are everyday victims of lawlessness in their borders.
