Senegal donates 100mln CFA for Japan's reconstruction

April 19, 2011

The Senegalese government has given 100 million CFA francs about US$217,000 to Japan, as the country tries to rebuild after last month’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Senegal’s foreign affairs minister, Madické Niang on Monday in Dakar gave the money to the Japanese ambassador, Hiroshi Fukada.

Mr Niang said this gesture is not enough considering the billions of dollars Japan needs right now, but that it reflects the sympathy and friendship that exists between both countries.

Ambassador Fukada thanked the people of Senegal and the Senegalese government for its assistance.

He said the support from the international community will encourage Japan to reconstruct the country within a year.
