Some 162 people have been killed in road accidents in Sierra Leone over the past four months, Sierra Leone’s police have said.

Statistics released over the weekend said the large number road accident deaths took place from January to May 9 this year.

This is mainly due to excessive speeding, reckless driving as well as poor road conditions in the West African nation.

In 2011, Sierra Leone police said fines amounting to about US$1m were imposed on drivers for reckless driving and other violations of traffic rules.

But this is doing little to reduce the high rate of road accidents and fatalities, as WADR’s Freetown Correspondent Mohamed Konneh reports.
