Conde wants halt to revision of Guinea voters list
Guinean President Alpha Conde has asked the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stop the ongoing revision of the national voters register.
In a statement read on national radio and TV Sunday night, the Cabinet Director and presidential spokesman, Naby Youssouf Kiridi Bangoura said, President Conde wants to reassure the opposition and all those who are against the exercise launched in May.
The Guinean leader’s move comes after the opposition declared this Monday as “no business day” in Conakry, in order to pressure the government to set a date for the parliamentary and general elections and the removal of the INEC boss Lounsséni Camara.
According to WADR’s Conakry Correspondent, the “no business day” has not been widely respected.
Last week’s opposition street protest against the delay in the elections and demand for the removal of the INEC boss ended in violence, with a number of persons injured.
