A split appears to be developing in Senegal’s opposition coalition, “Beno Siggil Senegal,” ahead of next year’s presidential election just under three months away.

The coalition, which is made up of dozens of Senegal’s mushrooming political parties, failed to agree on having a single presidential candidate for next year’s election through vote.

But at a meeting on Thursday in the capital, Dakar, the coalition appointed former Prime Minister Moustapha Niasse as flag bearer, but the other main contender Ousmane Tanor Dieng rejected the move.

Mr.Dieng argued that he has the support of many of the parties that make up the opposition coalition and insisted that he would still run on Benno-Siggil Senegal ticket in February’s election.

The coalition is expected to be the main challenger of the ruling Senegal Democratic Party (PDS) of incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade.
