Benin Unhappy With AU’s Role in Libya
October 27, 2011After the secret burial of the late Libyan leader Col. Moamar Kadhafi in the Libyan Desert, the Republic of Benin has expressed dismay over the role played by the African Union (AU) in the Libyan crisis.
Speaking through its Minister of Foreign Affairs and African integration, Nassirou Bako-Arifari, the West African nation said the Libyan crisis should provide African leaders an avenue to re-examine their role in crisis management on the continent.
“What happened in Libya is a shortfall of the African Union diplomacy”, the Beninese foreign minister pointed out in Cotonou recently.
“We (African leaders) take all our responsibilities and we think that we have the opportunity to examine again the place of our continent and the role the African Union should play on questions related to democracy, governance, human rights and freedom in member countries,” he noted.
