Benin: Group launches new health recording system

August 9, 2011

A new initiative to store health records of people right from when they are conceived in their mother’s womb has been launched in Benin’s capital Cotonou.

This unique child health record created by a Beninese pediatrics company, aims to provide better follow-up for children in Benin, Senegal, Ivory Coast and other countries.

“In reality, it’s a health record book containing health data of the baby, from the time it was conceived, when the mother becomes pregnant. The different illness the mother had during her pregnancy, the history of the child’s birth,” said Capossi Adelou, a pediatrician and one of the designers of the new recording system.

Adelou said the system will help in following up the baby’s nutrition, vaccination and health check, and give the baby the opportunity to grow up healthy and become an adult able to fulfill his or her tasks.

He said it will become a link between all health workers, be they in Benin, Togo, France or China.

“As soon as the health worker goes through the health record book, if it has been correctly filled in, then he or she will see the child’s entire health data from birth till the moment he or she comes to office,” said Adelou, adding “This health record book is some kind of a health identity card.”
