S.Leone: Pres. Jonathan nudges credible polls

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called for free, fair and credible elections in Sierra Leone, noting that this will promote peace in the country that went through a decade of civil war.

The advice of visiting President Jonathan comes just over two-weeks to presidential, parliamentary and local council elections scheduled for 17 November this year.

Another mass grave has been discovered in the district of Togué, in Duekoue, western Cote d’Ivoire, scene of massacres in the post-election crisis pitting alleged supporters of ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and President Alassane Ouattara.

The dead have been formally identified as former refugees in a camp in Duékoué, which was the scene of a number of vicious attacks in July that left the camp effectively destroyed.

Former Beninese Army Major General Fernand Marcel Amoussou has reminded military forces of their obligation to remain neutral and respectful of electoral processes.

Amoussou, ex-Force Commander of the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, was speaking at a forum this week in the Guinean capital, Conakry, gathering military chiefs and election experts from 10 West African nations.

Ghana to deploy 5,000 soldiers for December polls

Ghanaian authorities are trying to ensure that security is water-tight for elections slated for 7 December by deploying some 5,000 soldiers across the country.

There are over 25,000 polling stations and about 10 million voters registered for the presidential and parliamentary polls.

Guinea: Deportation of Malians goes diplomatic

Mali on Monday sent its Minister for Malians Overseas and African Integration, Rokiatou Guiguini, to Conakry for talks with Guinean Foreign Minister on the recent deportation of 25 Malians for alleged links with Islamists in the north of Mali.

The Malian minister also held talks with Guinean Prime Minister Mohamed Saïd Fofana.

Guinea Bissau: Analyst speaks on ‘coup’ claims

At least seven persons were killed in a shootout on Sunday in Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau, highlighting that the West African nation continues to be volatile, some six months after a controversial coup removed the government of Carlos Gomes Junior.

The ECOWAS-backed interim government in Bissau has accused former colonial power, Portugal, the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries and ex-Prime Minister Junior of being behind the “coup attempt”.

This could be as a result of a high level international meeting held last week in the capital Bamako reportedly intended to consolidate plans for the deployment of the intervention force.

Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia reaffirm security ties

The leaders of Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire have renewed their commitment to end insecurity along their common borders and promote a spirit of good neighborliness.

Presidents Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Alassane Ouattara of Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire respective, made the commitment at the weekend during a working visit to Abidjan, the Ivorian capital, by President Johnson-Sirleaf.

Nigerian Senate Passes Anti-terrorism Bill

The Nigerian Senate has passed a new anti-terrorism bill in the wake of a wave of attacks by the Islamists Boko Haram militants in parts of the country.

The new anti-terrorism bill, which was passed on Thursday, amends the Terrorism Act of 2011, provides for the office of the national coordinator of all security agencies responsible to fight against terrorism.
