COP 17 climate change confab opens, Africa "victim and actor"

South African President Jacob Zuma officially opened the UN climate change conference, COP17 in the city of Durban on Monday.

COP17 is the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Liberian Police chief, Colonel Marc Amblard has been sacked, as a result of a recommendation of an independent panel which has just ended investigation into the November 7 clashes referred to locally as "bloody Monday" between the police and supporters of the main opposition CDC party, which left at least one person dead.

The Chairman of the US House of Representatives Sub-Committee on Africa, Christopher Smith has called on Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf not to include Winston Tubman’s main opposition CDC party in a national unity government, warning “their inclusion in government would be detrimental to the progress of Liberia.”

As polls open in Gambia’s presidential election today, Thursday, one of the two opposition candidates has criticized the boycott by the sub-regional bloc, ECOWAS, debunking its claims that politicians are being intimidated and the environment is not conducive for the polls in the West African nation.

The sub-regional bloc, ECOWAS says it will not send observers to Thursday’s presidential election
in the Gambia, because the “preparations and political environment are not conducive for the
holding of free, fair and transparent polls,” but the Gambian government has described the
claim as fabrication.
