Liberia: Activist urges gov't probe of lavish investors’ gifts

A prominent environmental activist has urged the Liberian government to investigate motives behind lavish gifts from investors to government officials, mainly during contract negotiations.

Silas Siakor, head of the Sustainable Development Initiative (SDI) cited a recent report by Liberia’s General Auditing Commission as forming the basis for his call.

Liberia: Teachers’ strike affects over 20, 000 public school pupils

Over 20, 000 public school students in Liberia have been affected by a strike action by teachers in the capital, Monrovia.

Teachers of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS), the largest public school body, said they will not return to the classrooms until their demands are met for salary increment proportionate to their qualifications.

Guinea expels 25 Malians suspected of rebel ties

Twenty-five Malians have been expelled from Guinea for allegedly holding “clandestine meetings” in the capital, Conakry.

The suspicion is that the 25 Malians are supporting the rebels who control Northern Mali, official sources said.

Mauritanian President Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz is presently undergoing medical treatment in a French hospital for bullet wounds sustained when his convoy came under fire at a military checkpoint outside the capital, Nouakchott.

The government has said it was an accident, as the Mauritanian leader was returning to the capital from a weekend in the hinterland without his normal escort.

Guinea imports 300,000 tons of rice annually

Despite its huge agricultural potentials, Guinea imports more than 300,000 tons of rice yearly, as the country faces recurring food shortages.

Senegal hosts cross-border cholera awareness, prevention exercise

A cross-border cholera sensitization exercise has been taking place in the southern Senegalese border town of Diaobé in the Kolda region, straddling Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Mali and Guinea Conakry.

Health workers have been sensitizing communities about the importance of basic hygiene and other methods to prevent and treat cholera.


 

Sierra Leone: Women fail to meet 30% quota, train to campaign for votes

In Sierra Leone, the number of women qualified to contest parliamentary and local council seats has disappointingly failed to reach the 30 percent quota they have been advocating for gender representation.

However, those qualified to contest are optimistic that they will win come 17 November when the country goes to the polls to elect a president and members of parliament and local councils.
