Guinea Bissau: Analyst speaks on ‘coup’ claims
October 23, 2012At least seven persons were killed in a shootout on Sunday in Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau, highlighting that the West African nation continues to be volatile, some six months after a controversial coup removed the government of Carlos Gomes Junior.
The ECOWAS-backed interim government in Bissau has accused former colonial power, Portugal, the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries and ex-Prime Minister Junior of being behind the “coup attempt”.

Nigerian Senate Passes Anti-terrorism Bill
October 19, 2012The Nigerian Senate has passed a new anti-terrorism bill in the wake of a wave of attacks by the Islamists Boko Haram militants in parts of the country.
The new anti-terrorism bill, which was passed on Thursday, amends the Terrorism Act of 2011, provides for the office of the national coordinator of all security agencies responsible to fight against terrorism.

The authorities in Nouakchott have played down the incident, suggesting it was an accidental shooting at a military checkpoint outside the capital, Nouakchott.
