Niger: National prayers for rain, amid drought threat

Niger’s President, Mahamadou Issoufou is reported to have taken part in a national prayer on Saturday asking for rain as his drought-prone country faces drought threat.

Reports say several hundred Muslims joined with the president to recite the Koran and ask for rainfall in a televised ceremony at the main mosque in the capital, Niamey.

Nigerian gov't takes over three banks

Reports say the Nigerian government has taken over management of three banks rescued under a major 2009 bailout amid concerns over their ability to recapitalise by a September 30 deadline.

An official statement said the three banks -- Afribank Plc, Bank PHB Plc and Spring Bank Plc -- "have not shown the necessary capacity and ability to recapitalize within the deadline.
