The cards have been on the table for quite some time now for the African continent to move towards forming a monetary union—ie having a single currency.

But with the gloomy future of the Euro and the vexing problems facing the EU monetary union, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is calling on countries on the continent to exercise caution, with harmonizing of fiscal policy taken precedent over monetary union.
